Some time ago I gave a glowing review to the CHESSMATE CHESS WALLET (click HERE to see that review). I’m still very high on that product, and still feel it’s the perfect gift for the chess maniac in your life (if that’s you, then indulge!).
Since that time CHESSMATE.com has come out with various new items (including the CHESSMATE ULTRA-WALLET … ah, a new thing to lust for!), but the object of this particular review is something that the Fortune Small Business online Magazine (in their March 2008 issue) spoke highly of, mentioning that this portable chess set fits comfortably on an airline tray table so you can nerd away the endless hours basking in your favorite pastime.

This handmade magnetic travel chess set features a 9.5” square magnetic folding board that firmly grips the pieces, has a clear matte scratch-resistant coating, and a marbled-foil inlaid border. The Staunton style chessmen are made of boxwood and dark Indian rosewood, and everything fits comfortably inside an imitation leather zipper pouch.

I used this set during my last trip to Japan and found it suitable not only for flight use, but also as an analysis/master game set while ensconced in my Kanazawa Ryokan – yes, it’s small enough to use on a plane or train, but large enough to use when going over openings or games in a hotel room.

If you like to take a chess set wherever you go, this will suit all your needs. And if you’re into portable sets, you won’t find a better one anywhere.
