These two classic books were my favorites when I was a teenager and I still find them extremely instructive today. Loaded with information, everything is clearly explained and fully illustrated with lots of fine examples.

Book One covers the static aspects of chess; starting with the relationship between the minor pieces and then giving you a detailed study of various types of pawn structure.

Book Two covers "Dynamic & Subjective Features." Here we are treated to discussions on attack, defense, maneuvering, and liquidation. The book ends with a look at some mental flaws (titled "Familiar Failings") and gives stylistic biographies of some of the giants of the game. Long out of print, I was very happy when Mr. Hays (Hays Publishing) brought them back into circulation. However, the 1964 hardcover editions (published by G. Bell and Sons Ltd) have superior type and are much easier on the eye. If you happen to see them in some used bookstore, snatch them up. Failing in this, the new Hays editions will prove to be a truly excellent value (very fair price, lots of magnificent content---you can't go wrong!).
