ERRATA SHEET FOR SILMAN'S COMPLETE ENDGAME COURSE
This errata sheet includes a few incorrect moves, a couple diagram changes, and one
major change to a Test.
PAGE 37: 8th line from the top.
After 13...Qg8 mate I say, "Black won by treating the endgame as a King
and Queen vs. lone Queen endgame." This should read: "Black won by
treating the endgame as a King and Queen vs. lone King endgame."
PAGE 58: Diagram 56.
Here we have an unfortunate typo. In Diagram 56 we have a white King on
b2 and a black King on g7 with Xs on c3, d4, e5, and f6. I had intended
to have the black King on h8 (instead of g7) with another X on g7. This
creates the desired odd number between the Kings.
PAGE 64: Twelfth line from the top.
This line reads: "of white's King.) 3.Kc5 (and not 3.d4?? Ke6 with yet another basic draw) 3 Kd7"
Instead of 3...Ke6 it should read 3...Kd6, thus: "of white's King.)
3.Kc5 (and not 3.d4?? Kd6 with yet another basic draw) 3...Kd7"
PAGE 78: 11th line after diagram 79.
This line reads: 3.g6 Rg6, 0-1.
It should read: 3.g7 Rg6, 0-1.
PAGES 145 and 153: TEST 9 has been changed on page 145, and the answer has been changed on page 153.
On page 145 the diagram (and caption) should be changed to this:
Black to move
White threatens the unpleasant Rh7+. How can black defend himself?
On page 153 we get the same new diagram as the one above. The answer will now read:
If you thought passively stopping white's check was the way to go,
you're wrong: 1...Rg7 2.Rh6! (Preventing Black from setting up a Philidor
with Rg6.) 2...Ke7 3.Ra6! when the threat of Ra7+ is quite annoying.
Instead, Black can effortlessly hold a half point by using the classic
Philidor formula.
1...Rg6! 2.Rh7+ Ke8
Now white's King can't advance onto the 6th rank. Since Black can
endlessly tread water by moving his Rook back and forth along that
rank, White must eventually push his e-pawn.
3.e6
Threatening to win by 4.Kd6.
3...Rg1! and the coming cascade of Rook-checks will make it clear that White has no chance whatsoever of winning.
PAGE 147: TEST 14.
It reads: Black is a pawn up and enjoys a three to two pawn majority on the kingside.
This should read: Black is a pawn up and enjoys a three to one pawn majority on the kingside.
PAGE 185: 8th line under diagram 188.
It reads: "White avoids 3.Kd3 Rd8+ 4.Ke4 Rd7 5.Ke5 Kd8."
Black's final move has been changed from 5...Kd8 to 5...Ke7.
Thus it should read: "White avoids 3.Kd3 Rd8+ 4.Ke4 Rd7 5.Ke5 Ke7."
PAGE 288: 4th line from the top.
The final move-pair in the 4th line is 7.Re8+ Ke6.
This should be: 7.Re8+ Kd5.
PAGE 289: There are two corrections on this page.
FIRST CORRECTON:
3rd line from the top reads: "the pawn's advance after 8.Rb8+ Kg7)"
It should read: "the pawn's advance after 8.Rb8+ Kh7)"
SECOND CORRECTION:
The 17th and 18th lines from the top read: "Creating lots of Checking Distance and threatening to create a dead drawn Lucena by"
An unfortunate typo. There's no such thing as a drawn Lucena. I
obviously meant Philidor Position, but the fingers on the keys had a
mind of their own. Thus:
"Creating lots of Checking Distance and threatening to create a dead drawn Philidor Position by"
PAGE 306: 4th line under diagram 316.
It reads: "1.e6 Bd5 followed by 2...Bxe6, =."
Correct is: "1.e6 Bc4 followed by 2...Bxe6, =."
PAGE 384: 4th and 5th line (3rd paragraph) under diagram 390.
It reads: "It turns out that Black can indeed achieve the sunny side of the diagram after 5.Kc3"
In retrospect, this is very confusing. I hate the idea of leaving the
poor reader blankly scratching his head, thus it was changed to:
"Returning to the arrowed analysis featuring 4.fxg5 fxe5 above, it
turns out that Black can indeed achieve the sunny side of diagram 380
after 5.Kc3"
PAGE 398: 6th line from the bottom.
It reads: "g1=Q 18.Qxg8+ Kxg8 19.e4 and it's all over."
How do these silly errors creep in? Here's the correct version:
"g1=Q 18.Qxg1+ Kxg1 19.e4 and it's all over."
PAGE 413: 4th line from the top.
It reads: "Thus, after 5...a5 6.f4! Black's busted: 6...Re3 7.f5! gxf5+ 8.Kf4 and wins."
Black's 6th move is a typo. It should read: "Thus, after 5...a5 6.f4! Black's busted: 6...Rb3 7.f5! gxf5+ 8.Kf4 and wins."
PAGE 438: Both diagrams need a black pawn on h5! Incredibly, the
absence of this pawn didn't affect the analysis or assessment, which is
how the error went unnoticed.
PAGE 469: 8th line from the top.
It reads: "29.Nb7 Kd3 leads to mate."
29...Kd3 should be 29...Ke3. Thus: "29.Nb7 Ke3 leads to mate."
PAGE 486: 1st line after diagram 520:
The final move in the first line after diagram 520 reads: "25.Rf7+"
Change 25.Rf7+ to "25.Rg7+"
