PAL BENKO: MY LIFE, GAMES and COMPOSITIONS by Benko & Silman

Winner of the 2004 BCM Book of the Year Award, this monster 668-page tome has 138 deeply annotated games, a discussion on how he “invented” the Benko Gambit, over a hundred amazing photos, in-depth (often shocking) autobiographical material on Benko’s life, discussions of the strengths and faults of many of the legends of his day (i.e., Fischer, Petrosian, Geller, Keres, Larsen, Korchnoi, Najdorf, the Byrne brothers, etc.), three hundred of his chess compositions, and much, much more. TAIMANOV'S SELECTED GAMES by Mark Taimanov

A fun and candid collection of Taimanov’s high-powered games. Very enjoyable. (1400 on up)

 

THE SEARCH FOR MONA LISA by Gufeld

The late grandmaster Gufeld often drove me crazy (not in a good way), but his love of chess was unmatched. This, his best book, shares that love with the reader via exciting games and wonderful stories. If you’re a KID player, then this becomes a must buy. (1000 on up)

 

TONY MILES: "IT'S ONLY ME" - ENGLAND'S FIRST GRANDMASTER compiled by Geoff Lawton

A collection of articles and annotated games by the late Tony Miles. Interesting and often moving, this was one of my favorite books of 2003. (1400 on up)

 

UNCOMPROMISING CHESS by Alexander Beliavsky

Another excellent game collection by a very aggressive player. Well-written, good notes, and a great addition to any library. (1600 on up)

 

XIE JUN: CHESS CHAMPION FROM CHINA by Xie Jun

Chronicles the life and games of China’s first World Champion. (1400 on up)

 

ZURICH INTERNATIONAL 1953 by David Bronstein

Thought to be the best tournament book of all time. The notes to the games are highly instructive. (1400 on up)
