No, IMDb does not stand for "I Murdered Dave
Barry," nor is it an acronym for "I Married
a Dumb Blond." IMDb, is just the most, totally
awesome website in the world - the International
Movie Database. And yes, all the answers in
life lie beyond the firewalls of this website.
Dorothy Gale herself, might say it like this,
"There's no place like this homepage."
Want to find out who played "Blain" or "Dutch"
in the movie PREDATOR? (Hint: The former was
a governor and the latter is about to become
one.) The answers are there. Want to know how
many Murphys are in the industry? (341 Actors,
188 Actresses, 48 Directors, 7 Set Directors
and 813 others). Yep, found it there. And if
you want to know who said, "There's no shame
in being a pariah," (Marge Simpson) you are
going to be happy.
You can settle every argument and confirm every
bet concerning movies and TV at IMDb. Just use
the handy search field. And there's more. For
example, want to find all sorts of movie quotes
that contain the word "rubber?" Look what the
IMDb quote search brought back: "Lousy. It was
like the rubber glove part of a physical exam."
- Drew Carey. "Invader's blood marches through
my veins like giant radioactive rubber pants!"
- Invader Zim. And of course, "Up your nose
with a rubber hose." - Vinnie Barbarino (John
Travolta).
Sometimes I am at a loss for a proper nice thing
to say to a woman, so I just consult the site.
From the mother of all romance weepies, LOVE
STORY, I might try to fit this quote into a
conversation, "Love means never having to say
you're sorry." But beware. A romantic movie
does not assure the best lines, as I learned,
from the same movie but a different line, "You
look stupid and rich."
Maybe something more classic is what is needed
so from SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, I might quote,
"You will never age for me, nor fade, nor die."
Yet, classic Disney might not be the answer,
as from the animated feature NEMO, "Look, you're
really cute, but I can't understand what you're
saying."
This is all just the beginning. Want to know
what movie is opening the second weekend of
December? (The conjoined twins epic, STUCK ON
YOU ... and just in time for the Oscar deadline!!)
Want to know what the film that finished eighth
during the first weekend in August made? (The
conjoined couple epic, GIGLI; $3.7 million).
To complete your learning experience, throw
in the celebrity birthdays, DVD releases, and
photo galleries. By checking out the site's
film goofs you can even learn world history:
e.g. from PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, set in 1720,
Jack's execution uses a trapdoor-style gallows.
This was not invented until the 1800s. He also
refers to Singapore and it was not founded until
1819.
There is so much more to tell but I have to
get back to researching the 1,397 people who
share the name Murphy.
